The Gimnazjum w Śmiglu is situated in the town and community of Śmigiel. Śmigiel is a small town in the west of Poland with some 6.000 inhabitants, and it is a typical rural community. Only a limited number of workplaces is available in our town and community, and consequently most of the inhabitants commute to the nearby towns and cities, Leszno (20km), Kościan (12km) or Poznań (60km). Most of the locals are either directly engaged in agriculture or ion services connected with the agricultural sector.
Our school is located in a large set of buildings housing two separate schools: the Primary School and the Junior High School. Until last year we used to be one big school with 1000 students and more than 70 teachers, and were called Samorządowe Gimnazjum i Szkoła Podstawowa w Śmiglu. Presently we are a small school with about 300 students in 13 classes and with 25 teachers. Our students are from 13 to 15 or16 years old. We work in 13 classrooms, a language laboratory, a computer laboratory and two gyms. The cloakrooms, canteen, library, the nurse's and the dentist's room we share with the primary school.
We’ve got some established traditions, like yearly welcome ceremony for new students in October, the School Day in May (Our school is named after the Constitution of 3rd of May), the Sunday in Gimnazjum in May, the Supergimnazjalista Competition for the most successful students, and the Closing Ball (for the graduates). This year we are going to start some new ones. Students come to our school from the small town of Śmigiel and seven neighbouring villages. Those who live more than 3 km away from the school take school buses.
